02 Who We Are
REEL is an immersive, hands-on after-school filmmaking program dedicated to empowering inner-city youth through storytelling and creative expression. Our students gain the unique opportunity to write, produce, and premiere their own short films while learning the fundamentals of filmmaking from concept to screen.
Our Story
REEL was born in East Oakland, out of a simple belief that every young person carries a story worth telling. In a community rich with art, activism, and resilience, we set out to put a camera in their hands and the confidence to use it. What started in a single classroom has grown into a movement, because when you give a young person the tools to tell their truth, you don't just make a filmmaker. You change a life.
REEL AT PIXAR

2026 ARTSFUND Grant recipient, awarded by the Alameda County Arts Commission.
By The Numbers
Powered by 33 teaching artists who mentor the next generation of Bay Area storytellers.
The Process

Students develop their story, write the screenplay, and assign crew roles.

Students step on set to direct, film, and record their story.

Students edit their footage and prepare their film for the big screen.
Premieres
Real films, written, directed, and edited by Bay Area youth. Two we're especially proud to share.
Now Showing · In Their Own Words
The proof is in their voices.
